Norovirus – homing in on the home

The UK is currently experiencing high levels of norovirus infections. If this is to be contained, it needs to be tackled at source – in the home. Norovirus infections are transmitted like wildfire from person to person around families and community groups unless good hygiene is practiced. The IFH has produced a briefing document which provides background information and advice on what to do to reduce the risk of spread of norovirus in the home. The target audience for this material includes healthcare professionals, the media and others who are looking for background understanding of norovirus infection and/or are responsible for providing guidance to the public on how to prevent the spread of norovirus in their homes.

HAND HYGIENE IN THE HOME AND COMMUNITY - A REVIEW

The IFH has published a new review which will provide support for those who work at the interface between theory and practice, particularly those who are involved in developing hygiene practice policies for the home and community, by providing a practical framework for hand hygiene practice together with a comprehensive review of the evidence base. It reviews the evidence base related to the impact of hand hygiene in reducing transmission of infectious disease in the home and community in Europe and North America and evaluates the use of alcohol-based hygiene procedures as an alternative to, or in conjunction with, handwashing.

DEALING WITH INFECTION RISKS IN THE HOME AFTER FLOOD

IFH has issued a resource sheet to provide advice and background information on cleaning up the home and decontaminating drinking water sources after floods. It also gives advice on treatment of water for decontaminating use during a flood.

HOUSEHOLD WATER STORAGE, HANDLING AND POINT-OF-USE TREATMENT REPORT

In this paper we review the range of simple, low-cost physical and chemical treatment methods and systems for safe water collection, handling and storage along with the evidence which shows the extent to which water can be the source of disease outbreaks, and how point-of-use treatment and safe water storage can reduce the burden of diarrhoeal and other waterborne diseases.
