HOME HYGIENE - prevention of infection at home: a training resource for carers and their trainers

In line with IFH policy of educating and motivating behaviour change the IFH, in collaboration with the UK Infection Control Nurses Association, has produced an interactive teaching/self-learning programme entitled "Home Hygiene - Prevention of infection in the home: a training resource for carers and their trainers". It explains the principles of home hygiene and how to put them into practice in simple language. It has been written particularly for community health professionals (e.g. community health workers or nurses) but is expressed in such a way that it can be used to educate any group that requires an understanding of home hygiene, ranging from doctors, health promotion organisations and food standards authorities to scientific media.

This teaching/self learning resource is written primarily to help all those (professional home carers and family members) who actively care for others at home.  It includes guidance on the day-to-day hygiene activities that apply in all households and to all family members, as well as those that apply when caring for babies, children, the elderly or disabled and the sick.  Thus, it can also be used to train any group that requires an understanding of home hygiene, such as doctors, pharmacists, public health and social care workers, health promotion organisations, food standards authorities, school teachers, consumer groups and commercial organisations.

The resource describes how you can use targeted hygiene in the home to reduce infection risks, and is based on the IFH home hygiene "Guidelines and Recommendations" documents.  It is written in a straightforward, easy to follow and practical manner and is available in CD-ROM or print. The first section explains how infections are spread in the home and how targeted hygiene can be used to reduce the risks. The next section then shows how you can put targeted hygiene into practice in your daily life and includes the essential information on hand hygiene, general hygiene and food hygiene. The following section deals with people and situations where there is greater risk of infection in the home. The final sections give details on how to select and use disinfectant products, where appropriate. It also deals with the concerns and questions often raised by people about home hygiene. There is a separate page for each topic.  The 'Carer's notes' cover the key points and are intended as a reminder.  The 'Trainer's notes' provide further background information.

The full digital/printed training resource kit can be ordered through the ICNA website ( www.icna.co.uk ) at a cost of £10 (£5 for ICNA members) or alternatively download the booklet (PDF format) here.
