Professor Nath is an authority in environmental sanitation deeply committed to the promotion of environmental hygiene and public health. He was educated at the University of Calcutta where he qualified with a first degree in Civil Engineering, obtaining his Master's degree in Public Health Engineering in 1969 and a Diploma in Sanitary Engineering (Delft, The Netherlands) in 1975.

Professor Nath has thirty five years' experience in the fields of public health hygiene and environmental management, including project planning, management, monitoring, evaluation and impact assessment as well as consultant engineering and advisory services. As Director at the All India Institute of Hygiene and Public Health and head of a multi-disciplinary team, he is involved in a number of projects concerning health and hygiene, in addition to those concerning environmental management, pollution control and waste disposal. Professor Nath has also had a long association with the Calcutta Urban Development Project, supported by the World Bank, and Evaluation of Community Water Supply projects sponsored by UNICEF. He has long international experience of undertaking environment related assignments for International Agencies such as WHO, UNICEF, World Bank, UNDP in many countries, and has completed a number of important research studies and projects on environmental sanitation, community water supply, waste water and management, resource recycling, community participation and social mobilisation.

As chief co-ordinator of the International Training Network Centre, India (a joint initiative of the World Bank, ODA, and the Indian Government), Professor Nath has planned human resource development and the R&D programme in water supply and sanitation. He has also designed course curricula for a range of training programmes for managers.
