NeLI digital library
The NeLI is a digital library bringing together on-line evidence-based, quality-tagged resources on the investigation, treatment, prevention and control of infectious disease. NeLI is currently funded by the National Library for Health and is developed and maintained by the Institute of Health Science City University.

European Food Safety Authority
This site provides up-to-date information on the activities and statuses preceding the operational start of the uropean Food Safety Authority.

Water, environment and sanitation (WES)
Site of the water, environment and sanitation (WES) division of UNICEF, offering the possibility to download the WES publications, including a hygiene promotion manual produced in partnership with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and the paper ‘Motivating Better Hygiene Behaviour: Importance for Public Health, Mechanisms for Change’, produced in partnership with IRC.

British Food Standard Agency
Site of the British Food Standard Agency, including interesting features like the ‘Hygiene Campaign’ to raise awareness about food hygiene issues, food hygiene publications in foreign languages, and on-line quizzes. E-mail alerts can be received by subscribing on-line.

American Society for Microbiology
A wealth of information including news, journal access and notation of international activities in the field of microbiology. An excellent search engine delivers abstracts of all its journals and, until the end of 1998, free access to the full text of articles from their ten journals including the Journal of Clinical Microbiology. Subscriptions will be required thereafter.

Clean Hands Campaign
The Washup.org website, is part of the Clean Hands Campaign (American
Society for Microbiology), aimed to spread the 'importance of handwashing'.
It is a useful source on the subject of handwashing where you can download
brochures and posters, read the press releases and view the interesting
hand washing survey.

Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology
Easily accessible information about APIC, a voluntary international organisation promoting healthcare epidemiology. Features of the site include a forum for professionals, a network list and a resource centre containing abstracts from the American Journal of Infection Control.

Bureau of Infectious Diseases
From the health protection branch of Health Canada, this highly informative site contains research data on infectious diseases with a special division in Foodborne and Enteric Disease. 

CDC
An excellent site run by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention with access to news, health information and US health data and statistics. From this site you can also access the following sites hosted by the CDC, or use the links here for direct access to each.

 

CDC Prevention Guidelines Database
Full text articles of all information in this database, including outbreak and case reports of infectious diseases, in addition to recommendations and guidelines for prevention and treatment.

Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Reports.
Accessible data from the CDC journal, with a useful search facility and ability to go directly to Morbidity and Mortality Tables. Each report is also available in full text: Portable Document Format (PDF). US data only.

National Center for Infectious Diseases
Comprehensive site containing publications, disease information, and information about NCID research programmes, laboratories and resources.

Enter-net
Home of the International Surveillance Network for the Enteric Infections- Salmonella and VTEC 0157. This project is funded by the European Commission under the BIOMED 2 programme. The overall aim of Enter-net is to improve understanding of the extent and evolution of anti-microbial resistance in salmonella isolates and of the distribution of resistant organisms such as VTEC O157 within the EU.

The European Food Information Council (EUFIC)
EUFIC is an independent, non-profit-making organisation that provides health educators, opinion leaders and the news media with science-based information on foods and food-related issues in order to inform consumers in the European Union on nutritional quality and safety of foods.

Food Safety Campaign Group of Australia
An educational site on food safety by the Food Safety Campaign Group of Australia containing clearly written fact sheets, information on HACCP and useful links.

The Hygiene Mark
The National Hygiene Programme of the Republic of Ireland runs the Hygiene Mark Certification Scheme, an improvement based audit programme devised and developed by Excellence Ireland. It incorporates Food Hygiene Regulations, "best hygiene thinking" and recognised codes of good practice.

Institute of Food Science and Technology
Basic information regarding the institute. Access to article titles only from the International Journal of Food Science and Technology, although a comprehensive Hot Topic section contains full text articles.

International and National Data on Foodborne Diseases in Europe
This site is run by the WHO regional office for Europe, European Centre for Environment and Health in Rome. It outlines the main activities of WHO EURO Food Safety Programme and provides links to WHO international and national institutions related to this subject.

IUHPE
A site describing the mission and activities of the International Union for Health Promotion and Education (IUHPE) and its organisations, with multiple links to publications, current projects, and health organisations. The IUPHE is committed to improving health globally through education, community action and the development of public policies.

London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine
Information on research topics centres and contacts within LSHTM, Britain’s national school of public health.

Health Protection Agency (HPA)
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) is a new national organisation for England and Wales, established on 1 April 2003. It is dedicated to protecting people's health and reducing the impact of infectious diseases, chemical hazards, poisons and radiation hazards. It brings together the expertise of health and scientific professionals working in public health, communicable disease, emergency planning, infection control, laboratories, poisons, chemical, and radiation hazards. This site gives access to the CDR Weekly and CDR Review journals in PDF, with UK epidemiological data and statistics.

Royal Institute of Public Health and Hygiene
Information on RIPHH activities, which include dialogue with UK Government departments and quality tests of hygiene-related products.

Soap and Detergent Association (SDA)
The SDA is dedicated to advancing public understanding of the safety and benefits of cleaning products, by developing and sharing scientifically sound information with the technical community, policy makers, child care and health professionals, educators, communicators and consumers.

World Health Organisation
A useful access point for all WHO information, including the World Health Reports and the Weekly Epidemiological Record.

Cambridge Journals OnLine
Access to the range of Cambridge University Press published journals with a cross journal search facility. Subscription is required to receive full text, but titles and abstracts can be retrieved.

Emerging Infectious Diseases
An access point to the full text of this peer-reviewed journal published by the National Center for Infectious Diseases. Contains an article preview facility for the subsequent issue, an archive, an image library and a search facility.

Eurosurveillance
News bulletins gathered from public health centres in the European Union concerning communicable diseases. Funded by the EC, it includes outbreak reports, surveillance reports and other related news.

Journal of Clinical Investigation
Full text of this journal, complete with images, within a comprehensive site. A search facility covers other journals, some of which require subscription to receive full text.

Journal of Clinical Microbiology
Full text articles currently online with a useful search facility.

Oxford Journals
The Oxford University Press publishes over 150 journals, covering a wide range of academic disciplines including medicine and public health. Journals are listed alphabetically and by subject area. Online journals include the International Journal of Epidemiology and the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy.

Science Online
Hosted by the AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science) giving titles and information on the journal ‘Science’. Full text articles are by subscription only.

Trends in Microbiology
Outlines only of current and back issues of the journal published by Elsevier Science.

This site provides news coverage of recent bird flu-related events as well as flu-related discussions forum .

Antimicrobial resistance (US Food and Drug Administration)
A sub-site of the US Food and Drug Administration site dedicated to antimicrobial resistance is targeted to industry and health professionals. The principal attraction of the site is the link area, which is divided into ‘Background', ‘Recommendations/strategies', and ‘Veterinary/Industry information'.

InterWater
Subpage of the Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WASH) site, providing information about more than 600 organisations and networks in the water supply and sanitation sector, related to developing countries.

BioMedNet
An extensive site for biological scientists of all kinds providing a large and lively selection of news, articles and information. Registration is required but following this access to all material is free and the rewards are plentiful.

BioMedNet Medline
One reward of registering with BioMedNet is free access to a useful version of Medline.

Food Safety and Hygiene Bulletin
An Australian site for the food industry containing the bulletin Food Safety and Hygiene, linking into a site called Food Science Australia which provides, amongst other things, consumer information leaflets and fact sheets.

The Hospitality Institute of Technology and Management (HITM)
HITM is a food science-based company for the retail food industry focussing on HACCP principles and practices with relevant scientific research and consulting materials. This site includes over 100 references on handwashing.

The Virtual Museum of Bacteria
A picturesque, well designed site giving extensive information on bacteria with sections on pathogenic bacteria, food and water safety - each with a comprehensive set of links. A fun educational initiative by the Foundation of Bacteria. Use the site map for quick access to pages.
